Description: Our class will journey through engaging, high-quality literature featuring compelling plots and inspiring protagonists. Students will develop foundational tools to recognize and thoughtfully evaluate worldviews as they appear in literature.  The course includes extensive reading, purposeful writing assignments, vocabulary assessments, weekly journal responses, writing contests, and a variety of creative and analytical projects. Each semester, students will select a biography to read and analyze in addition to the required texts. An Advanced Reading Program is available for students who wish to read beyond the  curriculum. The course follows a three-year rotation of carefully selected books, with no titles repeated, allowing students to enroll beginning in 6th grade and continuing through 8th grade as they prepare for High School Literature and Composition (English I/II) in grades 9–10.

Description: Through the use of exciting, well-written fiction and non-fiction, we will explore the theme of spreading God’s Word throughout the world. It is always my prayer that my students will grow in faith and understand better the adventure of being a Christian, and missionary biographies and fantasy fiction are especially suited to teaching Christians how to strongly live out their faith in today’s world. We will use guided reading questions, vocabulary, journal prompts, and projects to help us understand more deeply the works of literature we are reading.  We will use A New Grammary to study the basics of grammar as well as phrases and clauses in order to write better sentences, paragraphs, essays, and stories. We use a three-year rotation of various books, so students can enter as 6th graders and continue through 8th grade as they prepare for High School Literature and Composition (English I/II) in grades 9–10.  All assignments and classwork for Middle School Literature and Composition with Mrs. Oster will be posted weekly on the class blog: hhlosterlit.blogspot.com. You can also reference this blog for a more in-depth look at the books we will be reading and how each one ties into our theme of missions for the year.
