Description: Kate DiCamillo said, “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or a duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift.” Among the main goals of this class will be to delve into enlivening books and to ignite a love and enjoyment of children’s literature. Join us as we come to see ourselves as readers and writers! Students will have the opportunity to read and discuss several pieces of literature from award winning authors. In addition they will be given the opportunity to become the writer of a wordless picture book. The culminating activity for this class will allow the students to write, illustrate, and share an original piece of children’s literature. This class will embark upon a year of celebrating a love for literature! We will come together to learn about children’s authors who love to read and write. We will explore literary elements, increase our vocabulary, and strengthen our comprehension. Weekly homework will be assigned and assessed by the teacher, along with periodic quizzes, projects and tests. Come enjoy a literary journey together! Of note, a 2-year rotation of books is incorporated so your child can take the class 2 years in a row without repeating information, homework, tests, etc.

*This literature course will also offer an optional Advanced Reading Program to be completed by reading books other than the ones assigned, as an additional way to celebrate the adventures of reading.
