Creative Writing Workshop (June 3 – 24)

Description: This workshop is designed to improve sentence structure, grammar, and word choice by producing paragraphs, poems, a fairy tale, a life map, and a one act play. Students will be encouraged to use and develop their creativity through the written word.

Writing Tools Workshop (June 3 – 26)

Description: Does your student struggle to create and organize paragraphs and essays? Use this class to equip your student with the composition tools needed to complete essay questions on tests, organize paragraphs, develop the 5-paragraph essay, and create an MLA research paper. Written assessments will be distributed weekly. The length of each assignment will be determined by the student’s age.

ACT Workshop (August 4 - Sept 8)
(preparation for the September 13 or October 25 ACT testing dates)

Description: Is your student equipped with the test-taking tools needed to confidently complete the ACT? This workshop will introduce your student to the major sections of the ACT and strategies to tackle each one. The primary focus of the workshop will address the English, reading, and science portions of the test. A brief overview of the math section will also be administered. Students will have the opportunity to complete timed questions in each of the four sections.

Theatrical – Dramatic Arts

Hilger Higher Learning is pleased to introduce a summer series of theatrical workshops designed for anyone interested in the dramatic arts. Whether you are a seasoned actor or taking your first steps on stage, we welcome you to participate in what is sure to be a fun, memorable experience!

Express Yourself! Monologues, Skits and Scenes * (July 7-28)
Grade Level: 8-12 (rising 8th graders)

Description: Pull out that inner “Drama Queen” or “Stage King” as you learn to interpret a wide range of material and develop believable characters! You’ll explore scripts created especially for teens and create your own scenes and skits using improvisational techniques. Your new skills will help build confidence, stimulate creativity and increase communication, all within a comfortable, fun environment. A special showcase of talent will be featured on the final day of the workshop!

Discovering Shakespeare* (July 7-28)
Grade Level: 8-12 (rising 8th graders)

Description:“All the world’s a stage”…and you belong on ours! This unique workshop will give you the keys to acting Shakespeare while focusing on individual monologues and selected scenes from the Bard’s most popular works. You’ll learn how to accurately affect global dialects, including British, European, Middle Eastern, African and Asian! We’ll also take a “hands-on” approach to stage combat, proper phrasing and rhythm. 

*A minimum enrollment of five students is needed to keep the workshop open.

Get In The Act: Monologues, Scenes and Storytelling* (July 7-28)
Grade Level: 3-7 (rising 3rd graders)

Day/Time: Wednesdays 9:30-11:30am

 

Cost: $45 Instructor: Heather Kleiner

Description: Specially designed with elementary and middle school actors in mind, this workshop features a wonderful, entertaining variety of comedic and dramatic short monologues and scenes that help participants create believable characters. You’ll also learn how to captivate your friends and family through storytelling as we explore classic fables and folk tales and develop original story ideas. A special showcase of talent will be featured on the final day of workshop. Be sure to bring your imagination!
