Description: This is a comprehensive course designed to prepare the student for High School Science by introducing them to Life, Physical, and Earth Science concepts. A hands-on lab will be incorporated into each class. This class is packed full of facts, fun-filled labs and projects regarding science. Our goal is to help students become more amazed by our Creator, who made all things, and leave the class with a desire to learn more about God's creation. We use a 3 year rotation of books, so students can enter as 6th graders and take this class until they are ready for High School Biology and High School Physical Science. Homework will be given each week with a test every 3-4 weeks. We will start with From Bacteria to Plants book in August.

Description: Students will become familiar with literary terms and techniques as they explore EXCITING novels. Students will acquire the basic tools needed to distinguish between a Biblical worldview and a secular worldview as presented in literature. Extensive reading, various writing assignments, vocabulary quizzes, and several projects will be assigned. We use a 3 year rotation of various books, which are never repeated, so students can enter as 6th graders and take this class until they are ready for High School Literature and Composition – English I & II.

Description: This is an introduction to what students will face as they enter middle school math. If they are advanced in math as a 6th grader, please look into MS Math #2. We create a path for students to develop an in-depth understanding of key mathematical concepts needed to succeed in higher level math classes. This foundational class introduces the concepts needed for MS Math #2 and some early Pre-Algebra. We will cover whole numbers, decimals, number theory, fractions, ratios, proportions, percents, data/graphs, geometry concepts, and integers. Homework will be assigned to enhance classroom lessons and given for each day of the week, while tests will be given at the end of each chapter.

Description: If your child is an average 7th grade math student, this is the course we recommend. This foundational class should be the last fundamental math class your child will ever need and will cover the concepts needed for Pre-Algebra. We will continue the foundational objectives needed to prepare students for Pre-Algebra, while covering decimals, integers, exponents, fractions, geometry measurement, equations, and inequalities. Homework will be assigned for each day of the week, while tests will occur at the end of each chapter. If your 7th grader is advanced in math, please look at our Pre-Algebra class. Description: This course covers the math basics and prepares the student for Algebra I. We will introduce algebraic concepts to the basics of math learned in middle school. Topics that will be covered include: solving integer equations, multi- step equations, proportions, probability, solving fraction equations, and graphing linear equations. Homework will be assigned to enhance classroom lessons and given for each day of the week, while tests will be given at the end of each chapter. If your child is in 7th grade, they need to be advanced in math to take this class.


Course: Algebra 1

Description: This is a college-prep Algebra I course. Students will investigate concepts such as: solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, rational expressions, radical expressions, and quadratic functions. Students will also develop critical problem-solving skills by applying concepts to practical applications.
Pre-requisite: Pre-Algebra. Of note, if your child has another class that starts at 12:15 on Tues/Thurs you can register for a study hall from 11:25 – 12:05 that will allow them to stay at HHL until lunch (12:05 – 12:15pm).

Description:  Are you looking for a firm foundation for students to easily transition into our World Geography and High School History courses? We will briefly review history from Creation to the coming of Christ and progress in a chronological journey around the world studying the ebb and flow of empires, cultures, Christianity, and world religions. The class will conclude with an examination of the trends of the emerging 21st century.

Description:  Following the theme of a Grand Tour, we will "travel" from continent to continent around the world. Our studies with include geographic cultures, landforms, climates, resources, economy, religions, and governments of every country in the world. A “Cultural Fair” Extravaganza, complete with native recipe preparation/food tasting and country/cultural presentations, is the class highlight at the end of each continent’s study!

Description: This class reviews basic concepts and vocabulary of conversational Spanish for those who have had previous classes, but is also foundational enough for newcomers beginning at the middle school level. We will cover new material from the textbook as well as supplemental sources, including helpful websites. Correct pronunciation and fundamentals of the language are reinforced through creative assignments, games, storybook reading, interactive group activities and special reports, bringing Spanish to life and creating a connection beyond grammar and vocabulary. Students are given weekly homework assignments and are quizzed and tested regularly on their knowledge and understanding of the course work.

Description: This is an entry-level High School Spanish course intended to prepare the students for further Spanish study (Spanish II in particular) as well as to help them become comfortable with speaking another language. Students will experience the language, vocabulary, and culture of Spanish speaking countries. Basic reading and writing will be mastered with a strong emphasis on conversation. Homework will be given daily with a test approximately every 4 weeks.

Description: This is an interactive, entry level High School French course intended to prepare students for French II. Students will experience the language, vocabulary, and culture of French speaking countries with the aid of video, PowerPoint, photo flash cards, skits, games and more. Basic reading and writing will be practiced with a balanced emphasis on both grammar and conversation. Homework will be given each class with a test every 3-4 chapters.

Description: This course is an excellent introduction to the arts through two and three dimensional media. Students will explore God’s beauty and majesty as they learn elements of design and explore examples in art history. Some projects will include still life, self portraits, painting, print-making, 3D design with sculpture, typography, and clay! Various materials will include pencil, markers, charcoal, pastels, inks, paint, found objects and clay! Students will learn about movements in art history and study the techniques. Projects and art experiences required outside of class will enhance each student’s learning. Students will be taught how to discuss art in class, express their individual creativity and explain what they have created.

Course: Middle School Ensemble
Grade Level: 6-8

Book:A $10 fee for music will be added to your first month’s bill (this will cover the entire year). Students will be required to purchase a HHL T-shirt to wear on field trips and performances.
Description: Similar to our high school program, we will be combining the girls and boys into one group. That being said, each gender will participate in sectional rehearsals in addition to our joint rehearsals in order to address specific developmental needs of adolescent voices. This allows the students to bond with one another in confidence while we study the potential and physiological aspects of the developing voice. Additionally, we will study music history and appreciation through class work games and listening CDs as well as in field trips to the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. The middle school choir will present performances at Rock City and community venues throughout the year. Music theory, sight-singing, and rhythm drills will be regular components of the class. "Music classes offer many benefits which make them very indispensable. Performance programs enhance a student's sense of self esteem as well as their social skills. Students become a part of a positive group and organization. Not only do students profit socially from music programs, but they also gain academically.” (Source: The College Board, 1991)

Course: Elementary and Middle School Drama

Description: Journey through the land of imagination to explore theater in a truly sensational way! This course looks at drama holistically as we help students use their mind, body, emotions and spirit to explore the dramatic arts! Beginning with our imaginations, we implement fun and creative workshops to develop and build on the fundamentals of theater, such as: scene setting, expression, proper breathing, and character analysis. Students will become familiar with the many functions of a working theater and what it takes to make a successful theatrical production as they prepare for and present a play during the spring semester. Of note, a small number (10-12) of limited spots are available.


Course: Study Hall
Grade Level: 6-8

Cost: $15 per month
Description: This opportunity is only available to students who have another class beginning at either 12:30 or 2:10. It is our hope and desire for students to make the most of this occasion by using this time to study diligently, take a mental break, or read quietly. We’re also hoping it will help our parents by decreasing trips to and from the church. Your child will have plenty of time for lunch (12:10 – 12:30) either before or after the study hall. No instructor is listed since this is not an academic class, though we will have an HHL staff supervising and conducting the study hall.


Course: Middle School Writing Workshop (spring semester - 6 weeks)

Description:The objective of this class is to equip and more fully help middle school students with the academic tools required to complete a variety of writing assignments. Feedback will be given through written assessments each week. In addition, grammar, spelling and diction weaknesses will be identified and communicated to parents. Students will receive a special session to practice completion of practice essay test questions for general topics in science, history and literature. We will go over the following aspects:
